What is photojournalism?
Using a camera to document a specific time, event or idea, usually employed by the newspapers, or magazines. It is produced for the news using photographs to explain the idea. It was recognised in 1930’s- 1950’s, photographers would travel the world documenting world events such as the war, the wall street crash, how others live and much more.
- Timeliness — the images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events.
- Objectivity — the situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone.
- Narrative — the images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to the viewer or reader on a cultural level.
Photographers
Henri Cartier-Bresson (Humanist)
- Focus on geometry (diagonal lines, symmetry, spirals etc.)
- Be patient
- Travel widely
- Stick to one lens
- Be unobtrusive
- Not crop
I used Cartier-Bresson in my research for my final piece last year, he documented a range of images, using people mostly. I enjoy looking at his photographs, for its stories, history and differences.
